OCB (Optimised Cabin Bass)

In normal listening environments multiple sound sources can be assumed to radiate energy independently of one another. However, in confined listening spaces such as small vehicle cabins, multiple sources can interfere with each other’s radiation and can result in “holes” in the bass response. The conventional solution is to boost the frequencies within the “hole”, but this can cause issues with audio-induced buzz, squeak and rattle, and will often not actually improve bass output.

By introducing asymmetry in the phase response of the system, Optimised Cabin Bass (OCB) for Home Audio can increase the bass output without introducing any extra energy into the system. This results in an even bass response with reduced power consumption as well as reduced buzz, squeak and rattle.

CHALLENGE

In larger listening spaces loudspeakers can generally be assumed to radiate sound independently of one another. However, in confined listening spaces this is not the case. The output of bass drivers in confined listening spaces, such as a vehicle cabin, can destructively interfere, creating inconsistencies and “holes” in the bass. The conventional solution to this is simply to boost the bass but this requires more power and can worsen buzz, squeak, and rattle.

SOLUTION

By introducing asymmetry in the phase response of the system, Optimised Cabin Bass can counteract the destructive interference experienced in confined listening spaces.

RESULT

OCB results in a more even bass response without the need to boost the bass, reducing power consumption. OCB can also reduce audio-induced buzz, squeak and rattle.
