The main limiting factor of a loudspeaker’s low-frequency extension is the volume of the cabinet. The relationship between extension and volume is such, that to increase the low-frequency extension of a loudspeaker by an octave would require a cabinet with 8 times the volume.
Instead, Meridian E3 bass uses specifically designed filters to modify the low-frequency response and provide increased bass extension that would not be possible with a passive speaker of the same size.
The low-frequency extension of a loudspeaker is directly related to the volume of its cabinet. To extend a loudspeaker’s low-frequency performance by an octave, e.g., from 80 Hz to 40Hz, would require a cabinet with 8 times the volume, or double the dimensions.
Meridian E3 bass uses specifically designed filters to modify the low-frequency response of the loudspeaker.
This results in increased bass extension for a given speaker cabinet size, that would not be possible with a passive speaker.
